Jonathan Yao

My name is Jonathan Yau, a first year graduate student pursuing a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I plan to volunteer in Haiti for the summer of 2008 for Gods Chosen Ones Ministry International. This opportunity offers the chance to discover a new region, learn about the Haitian issues, and gain new abilities. Yet I hope to offer my own abilities as well as share knowledge and experiences from previous overseas volunteering trips such as Honduras, Costa Rica, and Italy. These volunteering trips contributed to my personal growth and enable me to share my experiences with others.

My first trip was in the town of Danli, Honduras, a two hour drive from the capital city of Tegucigalpa. I volunteered for Mountain Movers Mission International, at a local medical facility with international volunteers, including myself, assisted local and foreign medical doctors, medical students, and nurses in treating the health concerns of local residents. From my trip to Honduras, I understood the need for essential medicines and vitamins, qualified doctors and nurses. My second trip was in an abandoned chapel in a small Italian town for the Italian organization Legambiante. I, along with other volunteers, maintained a farm, which uses environmentally friendly methods of farming. During the past summer, I volunteered in Costa Rica at the OSA Sea Turtle Conservation Program. The program involved protecting sea turtle populations and increasing the survival chances of egg laying sea turtles along the beaches. I further learned the value of environmental preservation, and the impact of human influence on the global ecology. Through these trips, I dealt with issues concerning society and health, as well as the impact of the development on the environment.

While I am not volunteering overseas, I conduct research into preventing medical device surfaces from causing blood clot disorders. This research may prevent individuals in the future from experiencing blood complications due to medical instruments during surgery. Organization and a hard work ethic are important characteristics for this line of research work. In addition, I tutor high school and freshmen university students in several courses such as math and sciences. I experienced teaching small groups of students both in a group and individual setting. I also enjoy reading, swimming, working out at the gym, and playing the violin.

In my Haitian experience, I hope to provide needed service and help to a country that has experienced a lot of poverty and malaise. This mission trip will provide a glimpse into the Haitian culture that television can not provide.
